GazCal Chlorine Gas Generator for site and laboratory test and calibration
Jan 22 2019
Some gases are highly reactive and difficult to handle using traditional gas cylinders. Chlorine is one of these gases. With gas cylinders, accuracy and shelf life of stored gas is poor. To overcome such problems, the GazCal Gas Generator was specifically developed by Euro-Gas for Chlorine (Cl2).
The GazCal is a rugged, portable, battery-operated unit suitable for test and calibration both in the laboratory and on-site. Utilised across many industries worldwide, it is particularly popular with water authorities and in water treatment.
Ideal for personnel like water treatment site engineers, the unit is housed in a small and robust carry case. The GazCal provides fast test and calibration source, needing little warm-up time. As it is easy to set required ppm level through dial-up digital display, the generator is also suitable for non-technical personnel. The GazCal generates Chlorine levels from 0.5ppm to 20ppm and can be used as surrogate gas for the cross-calibration of Chlorine Dioxide ClO2, Ozone O3 and Fluorine F3 equipment.
A particular advantage of the GazCal Chlorine Generator is that cell life is only consumed when the unit is switched on and used for calibration purposes, unlike cylinders of chlorine gas mixtures that quickly go out of date with 6 months of shelf life. The GazCal does not suffer from such short shelf life issues. When the unit is switched off, the gas cell is off. The unit can reliably be used for 5 to 10 years, sometimes without change of generator cell, and only requiring an annual calibration re-certification (this is offered by Euro-Gas or can be resolved by on-site instrument departments).
The gas generator cell has lifetime of 500ppm hours which, as an example, equates to 100 hours of constant use at a 5ppm concentration level; enough for at least 400 individual calibrations. The cell life indicator shows the remaining life of the generating cell. Once the cell is depleted, a new generating cell can be installed. A conventional small gas cylinder, in comparison, will typically provide around 5 – 10 calibrations per cylinder (according to the experience of the engineer carrying out the calibration of the gas detector). Therefore the GazCal may initially be more expensive than a small cylinder but in the longer term, the generator will pay for itself over and over again.
Also with gas cylinders, you only achieve one specific concentration per cylinder purchased, like 5ppm Chlorine. The GazCal Generator is completely adjustable between 0.5ppm to 20.0ppm range and in 0.1ppm steps. Thus many different concentration levels can be produced from one device. Moreover, low concentrations of Chlorine are reliably produced with the GazCal, including 1ppm and 2ppm levels, whereas it is difficult to provide cylinder stability at low concentration levels.
